Now the children of Sahoo Village of Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh are mastering their skills on trade which has been the only source of income for their parents and ancestors, i.e., agriculture that too is part of the school syllabus along with their regular subjects. Yes, you read it right, school-going kids are mastering their skills on agricultural practices while studying their regular subjects. This is one of the very important innovative practices which have been just initiated in the traditional education system.

The gap between industry and academics has widened in the knowledge based world. In our traditional education system, we used to study subjects like history, maths, science, etc., but we were far away from the skill sets which might help us to gain meaningful livelihood. With prior recognition of the need of skilling in our country, National Skill Development Policy was formulated in 2009 to skill unskilled workforce.

Agriculture has lost its sheen since independence. National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) study reveals that 42% farmers want to quit farming if given an alternative and 62% farmers don’t want their children to pursue agriculture as a career option. And this situation will be more visible if precursors of agriculture remain same.
In recent years, a couple of state government has started vocational subject in their schools to make education more relevant to the new era.

School children of standard IXth, of the Government Senior Secondary School (GSSS), Sahoo, Himachal Pradesh, is having option to choose any one of the vocational subjects as an optional subject. This would be level one for standard IXth, and these students have to pursue the vocational subject for the next 3 years, i.e.,  till XIIth standard when they will have completed 4 levels   and will be awarded with completion of 4 levels of that  chosen vocational subject.

These students from a small village after completion of this secondary education will be equipped with horticulture and will not have to depend upon further education for their livelihood. Children are taking up this course with loads of enthusiasm. The whole curriculum is focused more practically stressing more on the outcome. Every class is having theory, field visits, guest lectures and industrial visits. The curriculum is designed in such a way that every student is meaningfully engaged and giving their best to excel.

National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF), is Ministry of Human Resource Development’s flagship program for linking traditional education and vocational trainings. This program is anchored of NSDA (Nation Skill Development Agency) and implemented through NSQC. Sector Skill Councils will represent industry for job roles for particular levels and the program is executed at school and college of the respective state government. This framework supports and enhances national as well as international mobility of person compliant qualification. The NSQF is based on an outcome based approach and each level is defined and described in terms of competency level that would need to achieve in jobs.

Under this program, 10 levels have been developed with respect to complexity, knowledge required to represent competence and outcome of the job role.  The trade of agriculture is having jobs like paddy farmer, dairy worker, sugarcane cultivator, micro irrigation technician, vegetable farmer, gardener, floriculturist (open and protected cultivation), etc.
It is needless to say that such efforts are again helping the economy to make fundamentals strong as must be the case of agrarian economy.

Small and marginal farmers constitute major portion of agriculture segment (81%). And this is the strata where immediate intervention is required to protect the larger future interest of the country. Hope that NSQF in agriculture as a vocational subject will be a major strategic intervention to protect the potential farmers. Also with the hope that NSQF programs would reach to all government schools in all other remaining states.

Labour Reforms: ‘Skill Development’

The century old definition of industrial relations is defined as the relations between employer and employee. I happened to watch NDTV Dialogues on “Make in India:-Liberizing Labour Laws”. Although the learning from the session were immense and lasting one.

PM-Narendra Modi’s Make in India campaign is aimed to make India as a manufacturing hub. Government is taking appropriate steps to smooth sailing of investors.
Keeping in view the fact that for gaining the competitive advantage in business and marking presence in global economy we need reforms. India rank at 134th position in doing business ranking of World Bank out of 189 countries. And labor laws are one among parameter in running business.

India needs a major reform in Industrial laws governing labour force where worker needs to be involved and engaged so that reforms can be accepted with high degree of motivation. Labour laws shall allow management and workers to act as team. Our laws are mean for earlier era i.e. philanthropic era.  There was constant innovation in each and every field these innovation have sustained our industry, we cannot see the technologies which were in use earlier era when most of the acts were enacted. The amendments in laws over a period of time are done to have right interpretations of the meaning of the laws. These laws were from non-competitive era. Laws and labour practices were far-far away from reforms.

Workers need salary on time, wage/salary guarantee/job guarantee and social security. Almost all disputes are arises around these parameters and workers motivation is attached to same. Most productive workforce can be created by reforming labour laws around this parameter. The distinguishing figures like employee and employer has to be put in equitable framework. Centaury has changed but the mindset of pronouncing labour and worker yet not changed. The distinguishing figures are creating gaps and exclusive practices. We are leaving in the era where each one of us has to contribute and reforms shall address these issues and provide an environment of inclusiveness in an equitable framework.

However, in my opinion India needs a labour reform in Skill Development. 85% percent of workforce in India is unskilled. We are yet to get the benefits of demographic dividends. Skilled workforce is in shortage which has leading into major disputes. Skilled work force will leads to higher production and thereby promoting nation’s development.

The right time has arrived to work on for getting the advantage of demographic dividend before it is turning into demographic disaster. Skill Development will leads to Nation’s Development and ultimately these will address the issues of industrial disputes. In real sense Skill Development would be the major reforms and act as catalyst for Make in India.

How Travelling Changes our life…

How Travelling Changes our Life…

“Not all those who wander are lost.” – J.R.R Tolkien

Truer words have never been spoken. Travelling shouldn't be a chore. It shouldn't be an escape. It shouldn't be a rush to a destination. One must travel for travel’s sake. Because travelling changes who we are for the better. In more ways than one, Travelling should be aims towards discovery...

1. Every trip makes you, little SMART….
You become smarter in terms of expectations from LIFE… because you come to know about how people are
living….You come to know LIFE is beautiful.
(Govindghat, UK)

2. You don’t feel lonely anymore...….

Every trip makes you to feel that you are surrounded by beautiful serenity…. There are others who are directly or indirectly with you… you are not alone anymore….you forget the loneliness….

(Somnath, Gujrath)

3. You start respecting little things in life……

Travelling teaches you to respect little but important things in life. You recognize their value and start respecting them.

4. You find that life is more entertaining, we are the central character…….
One more important thing is to be an entertainer. The rarest quality of human being. Life in nutshell is
entertainment and one has to keep one self engaged with others. As you are the central characters with others.

(Ghagharia, UK)

5. You discover the happiest living creature on planet.
No matter whom you are where you are. Happiness must follow you. And you must fallow the happiness.
Some smiling faces teaches you…..nothing is important than happiness.

6. You started believing in spirituality.
As you crosses mile by miles. You started observing the path fallowed by masses to establish the peace in
mind. Some call them it as religious once and you called them are spiritual once. And you concludes that
spirituality is there to purify soul.

(Somnath, Gujrath)
7. Less traveled path…..
You wonder when you reached the destination of less traveled path.. You won’t believe own self…. And amusement begun in your life.

(Valley of Flowers, UK)

8. Sometimes you are helpless.….to gain hopes…
Sometimes you are speechless and helpless. You try to gain hope with this experience.

9. You discovers your own Dharma......
And you discovers that what you really mean for..........

                                                                               (McLeodganj, HP)
10.You make new lifetime friends….
As much you travel, that you makes new friends. Your co-passengers will become your best buddies. Keep
them, retain them. That’s only sole property you owe in world.

11. Every Sunset is Sunrise for you....
For you every sunset is Sunrise....You started looking for new avenues and ignited to explore more..and more.

Empathy at Work

Empathy at Work

Post swearing in ceremony after general elections in India were much debated topic especially after allocation of ministries to those who swore in. Our HRD(Human Recourse Development) minister Smriti Irani was under acute criticism by political group regarding her qualification to became as HRD minister for the county having more than billion population.

Few people were opinion that HRD minister must be well qualified person. Her qualification is 12th pass out; according to criticizers this qualification doesn't suits to become the HRD minister. India has set well framed qualification criteria for all government position except for minister. Criticizers have forgotten that they were given ample opportunity to set requisite qualification criteria for ministers but somehow they have missed it to reserve their right to criticize others.

Do we really think that qualification in real sense matters for the general positions like ministers those are provided with qualified administrative mechanism ranges from secretary, IAS Officers to clerks? However, I do believe that qualification matters and requisite for specified positions like doctors, civil engineer those who are directly involved in implementation.

The point of discussion is Smriti is young minister having lot of empathy to work with sector and set milestone under her tenure with HRD ministry.  She has raises herself to the level that she deserves to become HRD minister. Her journey towards destination is not the cakewalk. She is theatrical actress and gained her name and fame in Indian television space.

She is carrying empathy with her to perform her duties as HRD minister. It wasn't the easy task to gain name with this qualification especially when there is cut through completion.
She knows what it takes to became well educated without any formal education. She knows the loop wholes in education system and where interventions are needed to make thousands of Smriti’s. In fact being women her immediate focus must be on skilling women. Where we are as a county lagging behind far.
Education has changed its own definition to ‘skilling’. Where people are trained to gain some meaningful livelihood. Skilling one women would skilled entire family.  Her appointment would help India to get benefit of demographic dividend.

I sincerely believed that empathy at workplace will help to flourish performance of individual. Empathy is psychological term where person is having ability put oneself into other shoes and feel the way they are feeling. And actions towards empathetic emotions would deliver great deal of desirable performance. Empathy is helps individual to get aligned with organizational vision and evolve the vision. Empathy also helps to complement individual values to become shared values. Empathy got its own important place when diversity merges to form unity.

I am hopeful that her empathetic skill sets will help India to transform image from Scam India to ‘Skilled India’.

Empathy at work will transform India.
