Mamma Crow and Her Indomitable Spirit!
It has been raining continuously for the last five days — but today, the heavens truly opened up. The monsoon has well and truly set in this time. And as always, it remains incomplete without battering Mumbai with full force.
Today being a Sunday, I found myself spending some quiet time by the window, watching raindrops fall from the sky to the earth below. I live on the fifth floor, nearly twenty meters above the ground. A coconut tree has grown right up to my window — and from the outside, it must have looked as though the tree and the window were in quiet conversation with each other.
A crow family had begun building their nest during the scorching heat of summer and completed it just as the clouds started rolling in. She has now laid eggs in that nest. The branch of the coconut tree was chosen wisely — the position offered shade from the summer heat — but it left the nest dangerously exposed to the monsoon rains, with no shelter from the downpour.
For the last five days, she has been sitting in that nest, completely drenched, trying to shield her eggs from the relentless rain — waiting, with extraordinary patience, for the storm to pass. And the rains have been no ordinary rains.
But the rain is only one of her battles. As I watch and count the odds she has survived — an eagle circling above, rats lurking below, rival crows threatening from every direction — I am most struck by one particular vigil she keeps. She has not left her nest even for a moment out of fear that a cuckoo might seize the opportunity, throw out her eggs, and lay its own in their place.
It pained me to witness her situation. And yet, it was impossible not to be inspired — by her stillness, her endurance, and her absolute refusal to give up on the life she has worked so hard to protect.
